The Zodiac Man

Painting created by the Limbourg brothers between 1411 and 1416.

This painting, which is not found in any other book of hours during this period, appears at the end of the calendar of the Très Riches Heures of the Duke of Berry.

The image associates each part of the human body with an astrological sign, starting with Aries in the upper left and continuing counter-clockwise.

The originality of this miniature lies in the fact that it presents two figures back to back, set within a mandorla enhanced with the coat of arms of Jean de Berry: is it a man and a woman, day and night, the passage from one year to the next? This ensemble undoubtedly illustrates the correspondence between the human body and the constellations, the humours and the cardinal points.
