January is the only month depicting an interior scene.
In one of his palaces, the Duke of Berry is receiving guests on the occasion of the New Year. He is depicted in profile, dressed in blue and wearing a fur cap, leaning against a fireplace above which are his arms "azure semé of fleurs-de-lis or, with a bordure engrailed gules", and his emblems, small bears and wounded swans.
Behind him is the inscription "approach, approach," inviting his guests to introduce themselves. Three figures just arrived: they could be the three Limbourg brothers.
